Get Moving

In Exodus 14, after the exodus from Egypt we find the Israelites trapped between the approaching army of Pharaoh and the Red Sea. And the people cry out to God for help. Now obviously we all know what happens next (God splits the sea and the Israelites cross to safety), but before that God has a slightly surprising response. In verse 15 He says to Moses: “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!”
And maybe that is a lesson for us. Maybe that is what God wants us to do. Maybe it is time for us to rise up from prayer and step out in action. When we pray that shouldn’t be the end of the matter. Prayer isn’t about leaving it all in God’s hands and just waiting for Him to act. Prayer should be about us bringing issues to God, and letting Him use us to answer those prayers. If you have been praying for a friend to come to know God, get moving on telling them, on showing them what Christianity is really about, and pointing them to God. If you have been praying for change in the world, get moving and be the change you want to see in the world. You get the idea?
Now obviously there are some things that you shouldn’t get moving on without waiting for God, this is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ verse. But for many circumstances it is relevant. And in many situations for too long all the church has done is cried out to God. It is time for the people of God to get moving, to get to work doing the things God wants done on earth, establishing His kingdom on earth as in Heaven, pouring out compassion on the world instead of just offering prayer. Jesus did not commission us to hold more prayer meetings. He commissioned us to make disciples of all nations and advance His Kingdom. Prayer is only a part of that, so let’s get moving.
