Holy friend

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty—
the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.
Revelation 4:8
That is the song the angels in heaven were singing in John’s vision, and it is a powerful reminder that the God we worship is a Holy, almighty being. When something was repeated three times in the original text of the Bible, that meant it was extremely important, it emphasises the power of it. So we have to take it very seriously.
Holy is the Lord, we can’t be casual before Him, we must come with reverence and awe, and we must be holy, for He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). I don’t know about you, but the holiness of God isn’t something I dwell on that often. But when you do it completely blows you away. He is perfectly holy and righteous and almighty, and he wants a relationship with flawed, broken, messed-up people like me and you.
I think a lot of the time we can be guilty of not giving God the awe he deserves. We make him smaller than he is to fit our understanding. We don’t worry about sin as we don’t consider that it is an offense against a Holy God. We are half-hearted in our commitment to worship as we don’t remember how worthy God is of our praise. We come rushing in to prayer with lists of demands, forgetting that the holy God who we are praying to is the one who set the stars in the sky (Amos 5:8) and that we should be seeking his guidance rather than giving advice to him.
Yet he died on a cross for us; we must live thankful lives, full of praise as a response to all he did for us, pouring out our lives in love. And while He is holy and mighty, we can call Him friend! He doesn’t lord it over us, he wants to meet us where we are and walk the path of life with us. He is holy, but he is approachable. We have the privilege of being able to call the Lord of all creation our friend. How mind-blowingly awesome is that? Will you meet with the holy lord of the universe as your friend today?
