Live to feed the hungry

Continuing our series on the Tim Hughes song God of Justice, with a look at how we can “live to feed the hungry” First of all, why should why?  What is the importance to us of making sure the hungry get fed? Will firstly there’s Jesus’ challenge in Matthew 25v 31- 46 that whatever we…

Stand beside the Broken

“Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.” Isaiah 1v17 The Tim Hughes song God of Justice has been on my heart for a few weeks now, particularly the Chorus “We must go, live to feed the hungry, stand beside the broken, we…

Life Noise

“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”1 Kings 19v11-13

In life there is a huge amount of background noise. From traffic, from TV, from the radio, MP3 players, mobile phones, everywhere you go there either seems to be a lot of background noise, or else you probably have headphones in to block out the silence. Even in church, especially with drums and guitars being using increasingly in worship, it is hard to find complete silence.

But from this passage we read that God was in the whisper – and when there is a high level of background noise whispers get drowned out.

We have an expectancy that if God is going to speak to us it will be in a big, easily noticed way. A windstorm is pretty noticeable. If you miss an earthquake that happens in your area chances are you’re probably dead. And if you fail to notice a fire you may wish to consider getting an eye test. But whispers, they’re pretty easy to miss.

Many people feel that God doesn’t answer their questions. You yourself may have asked questions of God that you feel He has ignored. But what if He hasn’t ignored you? What if He has answered with a whisper, and because of all the ‘background noise’ you missed it? Are our lives so full of activity that we don’t set aside enough time to listen to God? And so full of noise that when He does try to talk to us we miss it?

In the days ahead, try and cut out the unnecessary background noise from your life so that if God is trying to speak to you through a whisper He won’t be drowned out.

Not my will but Yours be done

You are probably familiar with Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. When He cries out to God “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26v39 NIV). For Jesus that prayer lead to death on the cross. And it got me thinking. What would our lives be like if we made that our daily prayer? If every morning we got up and cried out to God “Father, today I ask that I would not do my will, but would carry out Your will for my life.”

A look at some of what the bible has to say about prayer.

First, in 1st Timothy Chapter 2 Paul has these instructions for Timothy: I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Saviour, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to

Spiritual Warfare

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the…

Are you real?

You may have heard the KJ-52 song ‘Are you real’. If you haven’t, you can listen to it here: I’m not just pointing you to this song because it’s a good tune, but because I want to focus on the challenge laid down in it, particularly the last section of the song: See there’s…

The Jesus Sim Card

[This is the first article contributed by a member of our forum, Starsky. It was inspired by the pastor Daniel from Arise Church] A guy was walking down the street. He was on the phone and in the middle of a very important conversation. Then unexpectedly his phone cut out for no reason and all…

You see Bones

“The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones….So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army.” (Ezekiel 37 v1, 10) There’s…

Overcoming Troubles

Imagine you are an ant, moving across a lawn, when suddenly you come across a rock. To the ant that rock is a pretty big obstacle that will block its movement and prevent it from going forward without changing direction. Now imagine you are a bird flying over the same lawn, looking down at the…
