Sustained

Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is the sustainer of my soul.” Psalm 54:4
In life there will be days when you feel like you can’t go on. When it has all got too much for you to handle. When everything has piled up on you at once. When there seems no escape from relentless pressures and trials. And when those days come we need to remember we are not left to face it alone.
God is our helper. He has sent the Holy Spirit as our counsellor and helper (John 16). He is the sustainer of our soul. He strengthens us. He restores us. He provides us with rest. He lifts us up on wings like eagles when we feel drained and exhausted. He enables us to run and not grow weary (Isaiah 40:31).
When circumstances overwhelm us we need to come to God for rest. Jesus has invited all who are weary and heavy laden to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28-19). He will give us rest for our souls if we come to Him and lay down our burdens at His feet. We do not have to carry the load ourselves any more. We can cast our burdens upon the Lord, for He cares for us. He cares so much that Jesus died on a cross to take the weight of our shame and guilt and pay it in full. And if God did not spare His own son, will He not graciously give us all the things we need to get through the trials and struggles we find ourselves in currently? (Romans 8:32).
Our God is the God who provides. He is the God who sustains. He is the God who helps us and delivers us from our enemies. He gives us the strength we need to face each day. He gives us the energy to take one more step, and to keep taking one more step, and one more step, to keep going for Him. He sustains and refreshes our soul. Though it may seem dark right now, when our trust is in God we know there is light at the end of the tunnel for earth is not our final destination. Heaven is our home and when we get there there will be no more tears or pain or sickness or suffering. The health struggles we have endured will be gone. The work pressures will be gone. The family heartaches will be gone. Until that day we will have challenges, but they are temporary. God will sustain us through them and bring us safe into His loving embrace as we receive the “Well done, good and faithful servant” of those who have finished the race with faith(Matthew 25:21).
In whatever struggles you are currently facing today, take courage from the words of Paul to the church in Corinthians “So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT). God will sustain us through the temporary, momentary afflictions and bring us to the eternal glory beyond all comparison that is to come.
