Wisdom and the Word

Since a dull axe requires great strength, sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.” Ecclesiastes 10:10
We need to be constantly sharpening our wisdom by spending time in God’s Word, listening to people explaining it and meditating on it so that when the time comes to need to apply it we will find that the blade is sharp. That way we will be able to make the right choices without it requiring great strength, without flirting with bad decisions, and will be able to succeed.
Sometimes it can be hard to be motivated to do the things that are spiritually good for us yet require a bit of effort, and so, so easy to do the things that satisfy us physically and require little effort. Like, after a day of school the last thing you may want to do is sit down and study God’s Word, but crashing in front of TV watching One Tree Hill? And I’m not saying there is anything wrong with a bit of relaxing in front of TV, but if we spend lots of time chilling and minimal time with God, something ain’t right!
See, the thing is, if we are putting a great priority on relaxing and having a good time than our spiritual growth, our priorities are seriously screwed up. And unless we are prepared to put in some hard work, we won’t experience growth in our relationship with God. If we desire the things of this world more than we desire Him, we need to question if we truly love Him. And if we want to make a mark on our generation for Christ we need to be choosing quiet time over Xbox time.
Through the Bible God gives us advice, comfort, instructions, promises, warnings and some great tales of other believers to inspire us. The wise thing to do is to follow His instruction to Joshua “Study this Book of the Law continually. Meditate on it day and night so you may be sure to obey all that is written in it. Only then will you succeed.” (Joshua 1:8). If you want to be truly wise, if you want a sharp blade so that you can succeed, then get into God’s Word today, and everyday!
