Reset your priorities
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
As we kick off a new year with prayer and fasting this is a great opportunity to hit reset on our priorities. It can be easy to let our priorities get out of alignment with God’s will. Just like car wheels can easily get out of alignment if you hit a bump or pot-hole, so too our priorities can get out of alignment when life throws curveballs, unexpected circumstances or surprises our way. It doesn’t have to be bad things – it can be just as easy to get out of alignment with God’s will when all is going well for us as it is when life goes wrong. When things seem to be working out for us it can be easy to take our eyes off God, to forget how much we need Him and to start to think we can do it in our own strength rather than relying on the help of the Holy Spirit.
This season of prayer and fasting is a great opportunity to hit reset on your priorities. To set aside the things that distract and make sure that you are seeking first the kingdom of God. There are many things that compete for our attention. Many things that we could give focus and time to. But there is nothing more important than seeking first the kingdom of God. It is vital to have an eternal perspective. The time we have on earth is minuscule compared to the time we will spend in eternity. So it may seem like we are squandering our opportunities for fun and pleasure during our life on earth if we devote to seeking first the kingdom of God rather than seeking first the pleasures of the flesh, but in the scheme of eternity the payoff will be so great. Make that your priority today and for the year ahead and you won’t regret it.
Prayer Point
Ask God for help in resetting your priorities this year so that you can focus on seeking first His kingdom. Pray for your church, that it would not be distracted from the mission of taking the good news of Jesus to the people in your town/city and beyond.
