Impossible Mother (Advent Day 11)
““Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favour with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”” Luke 1:30-34
Gabriel, God’s messenger angel had a message for Mary. Mary, the teenage girl was to have a baby. And not just any baby. This baby was to be the Son of the Most High. The Messiah, the unending King was to be born to her.
But Mary was confused. She didn’t see how this could happen. She knew the birds and the bees. She knew where babies came from. And she knew she was a virgin. She knew she could not give birth. The message the angel brought to her was impossible.
Yet in the miraculous sovereign plan of God the impossible mother was about to give birth. For “nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). That is the message of Christmas – when heaven touches earth the impossible becomes possible. God has a thing for moving in ways that “through his mighty power at work within us … accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). God likes to move in such a way that we can have no doubt that it was Him and not our own doing.
Do not limit God. Do not put restrictions on what He can do. God moves in seemingly impossible ways to bring about His plans. He enabled the virgin to give birth, and He provided her with a supporting husband who had faith that she had not been unfaithful.
Through her trust in God’s ability to do what He said, even when it looks impossible Mary secured a central role in God’s plan A for salvation. She became the one who gave birth to the serpent crusher. May we too trust God even when it looks impossible. May we seek Christ, who is reaching out to us in our impossible situations, offering hope and a future, offering life, offering breakthrough. May we not limit God. May we remember that when heaven touches earth nothing is impossible with God. May we have faith that God will provide and enable his plans to come to fruition. Heaven is touching earth and the impossible is happening!
